The other day I was talking with a group of colleagues who, along with me, are Columbus bankruptcy lawyers. Several of us were empathizing with the struggles our female clients were going through.

“Women may have come a long way, but when it comes to finances, they still fall short – and not just on the wage scale”, says the Buffalo Law Journal (2/5/05) “Today’s high rate of divorce… affects women’s financial status more than men’s, and we are seeing the fallout in bankruptcy courts.”
It’s even harder for single mothers, points out the Single Mom Ministry. In fact, singlemomm.org adds, the number of single mom households with children under the age of ten has been above around 10,000,000 since 1995. Less than half of these single moms receive all the child support they are due. I hear just this kind of story every day as I talk with many single moms in Columbus, Indiana about bankruptcy.
It isn’t only single women who have financial problems, though. The book The Two-Income Trap shows that married couples with children are more than twice as likely to file bankruptcy than childless couples. Still, an increasing number of single mothers are suffering financially. The Two-Income-Trap’s co-author Amelia Warren Tyagi claims the number of single mothers filing bankruptcy has increased by more than 700% in the past generation!
An MSN Money article remarks, “Divorce isn’t a picnic for men or for women, but the economic strain falls disproportionately hard on women.” That’s because women are often left to care for children or aging parents. “They have every cost that married couples do, and they’re trying to do it on one income.” One sad consequence of these pressures is the number of women who turn to me needing payday loan debt help. In quite a number of cases, student loan debt help is also needed.
As a bankruptcy attorney in Indiana, I could cite plenty of examples of courageous women who, against all odds, are fighting to provide financial security for their children. When I offer bankruptcy information, I know I'm providing a much-needed service.
