In these Indiana bankruptcy blogs, I try to keep readers up to date on the job markets around the state. Jobs, of course, play a vital role for debtors who need to rebuild their finances during and following a bankruptcy filing. Chapter 7 bankruptcy filers need to get back on track with managing their finances and keeping all the bills paid, while Chapter 13 filers must keep up their payments in their court-supervised three to five year debt repayment plans. In either case, finding and keeping jobs is key to the success of the bankruptcy plan.
The other day I read some very interesting advice offered to jobseekers in a blog on jobopenings.net. The article asked readers: “Are you ready?”, referring to the many job opportunities that will continue to become available as we “go green”. There are things both job holders and job seekers need to be doing right now, explains the blog, to prepare to become a more valuable employee or potential employee, in order to improve your own career security.
Jobopenings.net offers four examples:
Construction:
Take courses on using recycled materials and building for energy efficiency. Become an expert on compliance with environmental regulations. At your present company, if you’re working, come up with plans to save dollars by turning off idling equipment.
Transportation:
Learn about environmentally friendly practices in trucking or any field that uses many motorized vehicles.
Retail:
Help your employer promote eco-friendly products and reduce packaging. If you’re not employed, learn all you can about eco-friendly marketing, so you can bring extra value to a future employer.
Office jobs:
Learn about ways to save the company money by reducing paper use. Become the office expert by attending conferences and demonstrating green cost savings to an employer.
There’s no denying that we have a higher than usual rate of unemployment in Indiana just now. But, as jobopenings.net emphasizes, each of my Indiana bankruptcy clients needs only one job. In any job market, you need to prove your worth to your employer or prospective employer.
Improving your knowledge and skills, and saying in touch with current thinking and technology can’t help but put you ahead of others.
It’s certainly worth considering – perhaps your lucky color will be green!
